Several MTU operations cannot be done correctly without the factory tool: turning the engine to top dead centre with the barring device, setting injector height with the mandrel, pulling a sleeve or a pulley without loading the housing, or recording compression with the press recorder. These tools are identified by tool number (the F-prefix series) rather than by engine part number, and a substitute improvised in a workshop usually damages the very component it is meant to service.
