Marine propulsion turbochargers

A propulsion turbocharger works against a propeller curve, so boost and load move together with vessel speed and sea state. That makes the failure signature different from a steady-load engine: a slowly degrading unit often shows as lost vessel speed at a given engine rpm before any smoke appears. Two things are worth confirming on a marine unit — the class or flag-state requirement for the position, because some survey regimes require documented remanufacture rather than repair, and the turbocharger nameplate, because the variant can differ from the engine rating plate when an engine has been re-rated. Record both before the unit is removed.

Power generation turbochargers

A generator-set turbocharger runs at near-constant speed and load, which changes both wear and diagnosis. The unit accumulates hours quickly but with far fewer thermal cycles than a propulsion engine, so bearing and seal condition tends to follow oil quality and oil-change discipline more closely than load profile. Because the engine speed is fixed, a boost shortfall does not show up as lost speed — it shows up as the engine failing to carry rated load or as rising exhaust temperature at full load. Have those readings with you before ordering: they distinguish a turbocharger problem from a fuel or air-side one.
