Technical Notes: Drive components
Gears, shafts, couplings, belts, fasteners, and locking parts transmit drive to pumps, camshafts, and auxiliaries and hold assemblies together. Many of these items are inexpensive but critical: a missing tab washer or a reused stretch bolt can cause a far larger failure.
When This Type of Part Is Usually Replaced
- locking elements such as tab washers or self-locking nuts have been removed
- gear teeth, splines, or keyways show wear or pitting
- belts show cracks, glazing, or incorrect tension after adjustment
Checks Before Ordering
- Use new fasteners where the maintenance documentation specifies single use
- Order belts as matched sets on multi-belt drives
- Check slotted nuts, washers, and pins together with the component they secure
